WAIMATE TITLE AT STAKE

Middleweight Boxing Contest Hanham To Meet Caltaux Cliff Hanham. the Waimate boxer, who holds the New Zealand lightheavyweight boxing title, is to meet Vic Caltaux, the welterweight title holder, in Waimate next Saturday for the New Zealand middleweight title. It will be the first time in recent years at least, that a title has been at stake in a boxing bout at Waimate. Both boxers will enter the ring with a number of outstanding successes to his credit. Caltaux had to take off weight to make the welterweight limit, and he has been anxious for some time to contest the middleweight title, which is in his class. He is at present boxing better than at any other time In his career, and with a list of rapid knock-outs behind him, he will be a formidable opponent for Hanham. The Waimate boxer’s last appearance in the ring was against George Allen, when he won on points. Prior to that he obtained a technical knockout against the late Stan Jenkins in Waimate, and defeated Johnny Foster, the Canadian, in Oamaru. Hanham will have a work-out in Wes Jack's gymnasium, Timaru, on Monday night, which will be open to the public. The following amateur preliminaries have been arranged for the title bout: Heavyweight, Alec Mackintosh (Fairlie) v. Scotty Cordner (Timaru); welterweight. Bill Prattley (Timaru) v. Jim Sheddan (Waimate); lightweight, Bert Sterling (Timaru) v. Dave Sheddan (Waimate). Four schoolboy bouts are also being arranged. Mr Eric Pocock will referee the main bout, and the referee for the preliminaries will be Mr J. Balfour. NURSING SISTER HONOURED A dance and presentation was tendered Sister R. Olorenshaw and Private L. Nelmes in the Arno Hall recently. Mr G. Cleland, who presided, presented Sister Olorenshaw with a leather writing case and wished her Godspeed and a safe return. Mr C. Olorenshaw replied on behalf of his daughter. A shaving set is to be sent to Private Nelmes, who was unable to be present. The Rev. P. Keene also spoke. During the evening opportunity was taken to make presentations to Private T. Rolfe from the Arno Young Farmers’ Club. Waihao Downs Drama Club and Waihao Downs Tennis Club. Mr Cecil Lindsay on behalf of the Young Farmers' Club presented Private Rolfe with a silver cigarette case. Mr E. C. Wright snoke on behalf of the Rifle Club and Tennis Clubs and Mr C. Baynes for the Drama and Tennis Clubs made a presentation of a pair of leather gauntlet motoring gloves and a fruit cake. All speakers wished Private Rolfe a safe and speedy return. PRESENTATIONS AT IKAWAI Privates T. Rolfe and W. Samson were entertained at a dance in the Ikawai Hall recently. Mr J. O'Hara, who presided, wished both men good luck and his remarks were endorsed by Mr Boyd Wilson. Mrs O'Hara, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented Private Samson with a wristlet watch and Private Rolfe with a shaving set and a silver cigarette case. On behalf of the Red Cross, Mr Wilson presented both men with socks and handkerchiefs. Mrs Farquhar Mcßae presented Mrs Rolfe with a posy of flowers. During the evening two songs were sung by a trio, Messrs R. Cochrane, A. Wilson and A. Brady. Mr Frank acted as master of ceremonies. WAIHAO DOWNS EUCHRE PARTIES The final of a series of euchre parties under the auspices of the Waihao Downs Red Cross Sub-Centre was held In the schoolroom. Prizes donated by Mesdames Green and Hamber, were won by Mrs Harkness and Mr C. Thompson, with the consolations going to Miss Peggy Hansen and Mr J. Fenwick. The aggregate prizes, donated by Mrs Falloon and Mr Goodwin, were won by Mrs A. Bartlett and Mr A. W. Turner. A box of chocolates was won by Miss M. Holdsworth. Mrs Baynes provided the music for the dancing which followed, and Mr O. Green acted as master of ceremonies. PERSONAL Mrs W. D. Moss, Waimate, is making a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs C. V. Hart, Waimate, left, yesterday for a holiday at Waiau. Mrs G. Hewson, Waimate, is spending a few days in Christchurch. Mr Eric S: .ders, Omarama, who has been visiting Waimate, has returned home. Miss Vera McLauchlan, Waimate, is spending a few days at Kurow. Mrs E. S. Mills, Waimate, is visiting her sister, Mrs H. S. S. Kyle, Christchurch. The Rev. A. H. Scrivin, secretary for the Methodist Missionary Society of New Zealand, will arrive in Waimate during the week-end. During his stay in Waimate, Mr Scrivin will be the guest of Mrs K. Kippenberger and will conduct services and give a lantern lecture description of the work being done by the Methodist Church in the Solomon Islands. NOTES The Hook Basketball Club book Thursday, September 10, for a dance in aid of Red Cross funds. They were swapping "mean man" stories aboard the Rotorua express the other day. Presently the man in the corner said: "I was travelling from Lyttelton to Wellington awhile ago. In the smoke-room after dinner a welldressed stranger asked me for a "fill.” I handed him my brand new pouch. Later, feeling inclined for a whiff myself.
