“ The Timaru Herald ” June 11, 1880 Football A general meeting of the members of the South Canterbury Football Club will be held at the Grosvenor Hotel at five o’clock to-day in order to arrange matches. Y.W.C.A. Lecture Class These classes, inaugurated a few weeks ago. continue to be held, and have hitherto been very successful. The class was last evening conducted by Mr A. H. Dawson, M.A., Rector of the High School, the subject of the lecture. 'Botany.” being dealt with in a masterly fashion, and notwithstanding the hard names—regular jawbreakers—which the lecturer assured his audience were indispensable to a scientific subject, it proved exceedingly interesting. Of course but an outline oi the rudiments of the science could be treated of, and the continuation of the subject will be the matter for a future lecture. New Justices The following gentlemen resident in South Canterbury have been appointed Justices of the Peace for New Zealand: E. Acton (Pleasant Point). G. Barclay (Geraldine), S. D. Barker (Temuka). A. J. Hawdon (Peel Forest). F. LeCren (Timaru). W. J. Steward (Waimate) and A. Turnbull (Pareora). Temuka Road Board At its last meeting the Temuka Road Board decided to strike a rate of sixpence in the £ upon the rateable property in their district for the period commencing April 1. 1880, and ending on March 31, 1881. to be payable forthwith Bible In Public Schools A meeting was held at Napier last night for the purpose of securing the reading of the Bible in public schools. The Bishop of Waiapa presided. It was resolved to present a petition to Parliament praying that the Bible may be read without note or comment in schools, and a committee was appointed to get the petition signed, which will be forwarded for presentation to the local Members. A counter petition is going to be got up.
