PIPE BANDS
Next Dominion Contest
ALLOCATED TO TIMARU Advice that the 1941 Dominion Highland Pipe Band contest has been allocated to Timaru was received yesterday by Mr W. Duncan, president of the Timaru Highland Pipe Band executive, from the Dominion president of the Pipe Bands Association (Mr Telfer). This will mark the third occasion since 1935 that the colourful spectacle of a Dominion Pipe Band contest has been held in Timaru. In 1935 the Timaru Pipe Band won the quickstep in Timaru and carried on their success by winning the event five times in succession, as well as winning the championship award four times in succession from 1936. Timaru did not take part in the contest this year owing to the loss of players through recruiting, but residents will have an opportunity of seeing the Band in action next year. The date of the contest has not yet been fixed, but it is expected to take place in February or at Easter. With a numbei- of entries from the North Island, it is anticipated that 20 bands will take part, and the Timaru executive is confident that It will be able to stage one of the most impressive displays yet held.
