WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
RANGITATA BRANCH “London, before and after the war,” was the subject of a talk given by Mrs A. G. Brown at the February meeting of the Rangitata Women’s Institute. Mrs Brown was thanked for her talk and members expressed a hope tliat more would be heard of her travels at future meetings. The hostesses were Mrs Stole and Miss B. Wright and the Golden Thread was read by Mrs L. Hill.
Competitions were won as follows: Best worked supper cloth, Mrs Stole 1, Miss H. Chalmers 2, Miss A. Northam 3; snapshots, coloured scene, Mrs Geo. Edgar 1. Mrs Ruddenklau 2; child’s study, Mrs G. Edgar 1, Mrs Ruddenklau 2; farm scene, Mrs G. Edgar 1, Mrs Ruddenklau 2; honey biscuits, Miss W. Snell 1; date loaf, Miss Fitzharris 1, Mrs Ruddenklau 2, Mrs Chalmers 3; single bloom, Miss A. Northam 1; cluster bloom, Mrs Ruddenklau 1. GLENITI At the February meeting of the Gleniti Women's Institute Mrs Rawson extended a welcome to a new member. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs Olver in the death of their son. Mrs Winnington agreed to take charge of all sewing and knitting done by members for the party will be held in the school on February 24. The president spoke of the annual meeting in March, and urged all members to take an active interest. It was unanimously agreed to send a delegate to the conference in July. Mrs McKay gave a report of the one day school held at Scotston, St. Andrews, Mrs North an amusing story of a trip to Hull Fair, and Mrs McAlister read the story of the first Women's Institute formed in New Zealand, this being Rissington Women's Institute formed by Miss Jerome Spencer in January, 1921. An instrumental item given by Miss Grace Ramsay was well received. Hostesses for the March meeting are Mesdames Nicholas, Hood, Winnington and Foden.
The competitions resulted as follows:—Specimen bloom, Mrs Pringle; reseated trousers, Mrs D. Ramsay 1' Mrs D. Black 2, Miss F. Pearse 3.
