Some Good Finishes Events Well Supported Perfect weather and a fast track were conducive to good competition at the weekly meeting of the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club last night. The men’s 880 yards provided an exciting finish with Watson, the scratch man, just failing to overtake the winner, who started from 30 yards. The winner of the 220 yards, J. SOLDIERS FARE WELLED Members of the Winchester School Committee met on Saturday evening to say farewell to the headmaster, Mr J. A. P. Worthington, who left yesterday for Burnham Camp. The chairman (Mr B. Trumper, in acknowledging the good work which had been performed by Mr Worthington in the interest of the school, wished him the best of luck and a speedy return. Yesterday approximately 120 residents thronged the station to farewell the headmaster and two ex-pupils Messrs L. Connolly and T. Connolly. All members of the School Committee were present and also all the pupils. The children formed a circle round those who were going away and sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” As the train moved out rousing cheers were given.
PERSONAL Mr and Mrs J. King have returned from a holiday visit to the North Island. Dr. G. H. Gilbert, who joined the special force for overseas service, left yesterday for Burnham Camp where he will be engaged in dentistry. Messrs G. Waters and G. Burns left yesterday for Burnham Camp. Mr and Mrs A. G. Green, Gammick Street, returned yesterday after a holiday visit to the north. Mr Malcolm Cholerton, F.S.M.C., F.8.0.A. and Honours and Orthoptics, who has just returned to New Zealand after four years’ study in a London Hospital, representing "Procter’s,’’ the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be making a professional visit to Temuka on Tuesday. January 30. when he may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Temuka Hotel from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can now be made by ringing the U.F.S. Dispensary. ’phone 29M
