YOUNG ATHLETE’S MISFORTUNE

J. Brown, aged 18, met with an unfortunate accident this evening when taking part in a sports meeting. He had won the youths’ 220 yards in 24 seconds, easing up. had just been beaten in the 100 yards in 10 3-ssec., and was competing in the hop, step and jump when, after doing 41ft 4in. in the first jump, he struck the far edge of the pit in his second and broke his left thigh bone. Brown, who was at Nelson College last year, is regarded as the most promising athlete raised in the Buller district with national possibilities, and was expected to put up new records at the coming Mahar Cup competitions in the Seddon Shield area.
