WAIMATE A GOOD RECORD

Australian Cyclists P. Hansen’s Chances When they make their appearai. a in Waimate next week, the three champion Australian amateur cyclists, J. Walsh, H. Clayton and K. Stewart, should put up an interesting race against Peter Hansen, the Waimate rider, who can be described as one of the fastest track men in New Zealand at the present time. The splendid performance of Hansen at Timaru in the half-mile event is interesting in view of the fact that he .js> meeting the Australians at Walniate? A repetition of his form at Timaru would fully extend the Australian visitors, and Hansen may be the first New Zealand rider to defeat them. The time Hansen recorded at Timaru was 58sec. That was a winning ride from scratch. Jack Walsh (New South Wales) in 1937-38 in addition to numerous wins in club and open races annexed the one mile junior championship of Australia and the 1000 metres championship of New South Wales. In 193839 Walsh continued his victorious career in the junior ranks and his many successes Included the one mile, five miles and 500 metres spring championship of New South Wales, and the one and five mile championships of Australia. It was in that season that Walsh broke the following Australian junior records: Half-mile, 59sec (previous record 59 4-ssec); one mile, Imin 59sec (previous record 2min 3sec); 220 yards sprint, 12 l-ssec (previous record 12 4-ssec). In 1939 Walsh reached senior status and defeated Duncan Gray, the British Empire sprint champion, in his first ride in a three lap event, and followed this up with another victory ovei Australia’s number one amateur in a five-mile event. Walsh started off scratch with his famous rival in both events. Harry Clayton is Queensland’s best all-round amateur and in 1938 won the half, one and five miles State championships, in addition to being runner-up in the 1000 metres time trial. In 1939 Clayton •vol. both the Queensland and Australian road championships and only recently won the 187 kilometres Olympic road test in a decisive fashion. K. Stewart in 1938 won the Victoria championship and was third in the Australian junior titles. In 1939 he was the Victorian junior road champion, and runner-up in the Australian junior championship. Stewart’s many victories Include three scratch wins over Fred Ashby, Australian one mile senior champion, who annexed that title last year by defeating Duncan Gray and Bob Torter (British Empire 1000 metres time trial champion) . Clayton when competing in Queensland, is used to hard dirt tracks, while Walsh and Stewart compete on banked tracks. Walsh in undefeated in a scratch race in New Zealand and the other two have only been defeated by their colleague with the exception of one race in Auckland where E. L. Hughes ran second to Walsh in a points scratch race. Canterbury riders to race at Waimate are R. M. Kidd (South Island champion, who was third in the New Zealand sprint and 1000 metres time trial championships, 1939), F. J. Grose (New Zealand’s British Empire Games representative on two occasions and many times New Zealand champion over all distances), R. N. Knight (Canterbury and South Island junior champion 1939, and runner-up New Zealand junior championship, 1939) and N. A. Murray (third South Island ten mile championship, 1939). Also A. F. Day and W. R. Clough (third South Island open road championship and winner Canterbury junior road championship 1939). It is likely that other Canterbury cyclists will accompany these riders. At Auckland, Walsh, who is one of the fastest riders to visit New Zealand, decisively defeated Tippy Taylor, exNew Zealand sprint champion and New Zealand Empire Games representative at Sydney in 1939.
