WAIMATE MINOR CASES

Magistrate’s Court Yesterday’s Sitting Minor breaches made up the business at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Waimate yesterday, presided over by Mr H. Morgan, S.M. On a charge of driving a motor car without holding a driver’s licence, Mary Elizabeth O’Connor was convicted and fined 10/- and costs. For being found unlawfully on licensed premises, H. Eddington, R. Patterson, E. Frost, James ’ Williams, and James Hughes were each convicted and fined £1 and costs. On charges brought by Inspector J. Scott, of the Transport Department, Henry Greaves Thompson, for driving a motor car through St. Andrews at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour, was fined £2 and costs. For driving a motor vehicle without a number plate attached, Alexander Davidson was convicted and fined 10/and costs. For permitting a bull to wander on the main south highway, Thomas Henry Stevens was fined 10/- and costs 10/-. Civil Cases Judgment was given for plaintiff by default for the amount claimed with costs in the case G. B. Turnbull v. Norman W. Tregonning, claim £2/1/4, and costs. George Milne Collins (Mr G. R. Watters) proceeded against Charles Elliott Lavers (Mr N. L. Knell) for £4B/9/7 wages and overtime allegedly short paid and for amounts paid by plaintiff for accommodation and stores. Judgment Was given for plaintiff for £3B/4/3, with costs £2/1/-. William Wilkinson on a judgment summons, was ordered to pay James Moir (Mr T. W. Wilson) £4/1/6 on or before February 16, in default four days’ imprisonment in the Waimate prison. OBITUARY MR NEWMAN R. WILSON The death of Mr Newman Robert Wilson occurred at Brighton, Dunedin, on Monday, at the age of 51. Mr Wilson, who was born in Waimate, was a son of the late Mr Robert L. Wilson, and received his education at the Waimate District High School. He was on the staff of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., Waimate, and the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association Limited, Waimate, and served in the Great War, in which he had a distinguished military career, being awarded the D.S.O. and the M.C. and ranking as a lieutenant-colonel. Mr Wilson had always been interested in military affairs and took an active part in volunteering and in the Territorials, and was a keen rifle shot. He was a past president of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce and a past president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association. After the Great War, he was officer in command of the South Canterbury Battalion of the Territorial Forces. Since the present outbreak he had been appointed to the command of the National Military Reserve, Group 2. Mr Wilson had been for a considerable time manager of the Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association and was also a member of both the Accountants’ Society and the Otago Chapter of the New Zealand Institute of Certified Secretaries. In 1911, he was married to Miss Beatrice Taylor, a daughter of Mrs J. A. Taylor, Dunedin, who survives him. Mr George Wilson, of High Street, Waimate, is a brother. TENNIS FINALS TO BE PLAYED ON SATURDAY The two finals in the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s competitions, which were postponed last Saturday owing to wet weather, will be played on the Victoria Park courts on Saturday afternoon. The Waimate team will meet St. Paul’s in the B Grade final, and Hook will play Waihao Downs in the C Grade final. It will be the first time in the history of tennis in the Waimate district that two tennis finals have been played on the same day on the same courts. At the conclusion of play the cups will be presented by the Mayor of Waimate (Mr G. Dash). The teams are: Waimate (winners north zone) : F. Boys (captain), D. Taylor, W. McNeill, G. Wright, Miss G.
