CRICKET STAR GAINS LEAD

Keen Contest With Timaru No Surprises On Saturday Star gained the lead in the South Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior competition by its defeat of Timaru in the match which was concluded on Saturday. Star won by 63 runs on the first innings but at one stage it seemed that Timaru might make a recovery to win the match outright. Old Boys, Geraldine and Temuka had easy wins over West End, High School and Fairview. WIN FOR STAR MATCH OF CHANGING FORTUNES With fortunes swiftly changing to make the game exciting, Star held off a strong challenge by Timaru and won on the first innings. Star gained a lead of 63 runs on the first Innings but when they had lost seven wickets for 44 runs in the second it appeared that Timaru had turned defeat into victory. Then Roddick and McLean, hitting hard, added an invaluable 57 runs and the innings total of 144 runs left Timaru with the almost impossible task of getting 208 runs in less than an hour and a half. With Weir in aggressive form and McLauchlan beginning to open out there appeared a possibility of the team accomplishing its object. Both went out when they were becoming set and then Smith, batting beautifully, and Wilson carried on the good work, a feature of their partnership of 66 runs being the brilliant display of running short singles. The task was too much against bowling that gave few chances of easy runs and against keen fielding. Scores:

Bowling: R. Taylor took no wickets for 32 runs; V. Hahn two for 17; H. Welford none for 25; B. Roddick two for 43. The umpires were Messrs C. T. Moor and W. Grant. WEST END COLLAPSE OUTRIGHT WIN FOR OLD BOYS The dismissal of six West End batsmen for the addition of only eight runs gave Old Boys an outright win in the match played at School Park. The wicket was bumpy and dangerous when fast bowlers were used. Mainly owing to a stubborn stand by Blackburn for 35 runs, West End avoided the follow-on and reached a total of 128. Blackburn, the opening batsman, was the ninth man out and although he was lucky with several chances his effort was a valuable one, and because of his stands with Cameron and Hunter the tail took the score from 84 for six wickets to 128. In their second innnings the Old Boys wasted no time in making runs, attacking the bowling at every opportunity to add to their first innings lead of 67 runs. A declaration was made when six wickets had fallen and when West End needed 185 runs for a win. Blackburn and J. Fitzgerald gave West End a good start with 39 runs and RJJey helped to defy the bowling so that only four wickets had fallen for 70 runs with little time to go. It was then that Kane and Earwaker took control with a match-winning display of bowling that saw six wickets fall cheaply and rapidly.

BY EIGHT WICKETS TEMUKA BEATS FAIRVIEW Temuka had little difficulty in defeating Fairview by eight wickets in the match at Temuka. On the first day Fairview made 75 in its first innings and had lost two wickets for 14 runs in the second innings. Temuka made 150 in its first. On Saturday Fairview could do little better than in the first innings and although Kent, Stevens and Fawcett made short stands the bowling of Hertnon and Gillespie was always on top. With a total of 81, Fairview left Timaru the easy task of making seven runs for a win. This they did with the loss of two wickets. Scores:

Bowling: W. Stevens took two wickets for 1 run; C. Rogers took none for 8. GERALDINE v. SCHOOL WIN FOR COUNTRY TEAM A good partnership for 72 by A. Fitzgerald and F. Stack was the decisive factor in the -Geraldine Timaru High School match which the country team won by six wickets. High School totalled only 55 in the first innings, but made a better showing in the second innings. Wagner, McLeod, Williams and Patron being the principal scorers in a total of 122. Requiring 100 to win, Fitzgerald and Stack went for the bowling. Fitzgerald hit a succession of twos, until he was caught by Hunter off Paton when 39. Stack was aggressive till he was run out with 34 to his credit. At the fall of the third wicket, with 102 UP, the fate of the match was decided. Scores: HIGH SCHOOL
