PLUNKET SOCIETY

SUCCESSFUL APPEAL The annual shop day and district collection organised by the Plunket Society was held yesterday. Helpers were early astir and a lamb for a weight guessing competition was penned in the street before 9 a.m. 'I he shop experienced a busy day. A successful copper trail was led and made rapid progress. The president (Miss G. Brown) said that people had been most liberal in their support and that the appeal would be as successful as former ones Thanks were due to the Hayhurst Estate for the use of the shop, to Mr and Mrs Buzan for morning and afternoon tea, to the Power Board for erecting banner, to Mr R. McCully for giving a lamb and Mr L. Nicholas for organising sheep guessing competition. The shop was controlled by Miss G Brown and Mrs A. S. Mclnnes, the copper trail by Mesdames H. Wilson and A. Watson, competitions by Mesdames L. Whitehead, C. Cornwell and L. Robins, sheep competition by Mesdames South and Wareing, jumble stall by Mesdames J. Rooney and R E. Thompson, cakes and vegetables stall by Mesdames G. Hancox, Beck, Foreman, Buzan and Mosley. The district collectors were Mesdames F. Ruddenklau, W. Saunders, E. Livsey J. Ritchie, L. Gorman, J. Brown, H. Talbot, E. Gardiner, C. McLelland, G Stewart, W. S. Harbrow, R. J. Turnbull, Misses H. Chalmers, N. Twentyman and E. Maxwell. FUNERAL LATE MR B. HUGHES That the late Mr Bernard Hughes was held in high esteem was evidenced by the large number of representative citizens who attended the funeral at the Temuka Cemetery yesterday afternoon. A full choral service was held at St. Peter’s Church of England, the Rev. L. A. Barnes officiating at the service and also at the graveside. Mr S. W. Booth was at the organ. The cortege which left the church was one of the longest seen in the district for some years. The pall bearers were Messrs E. R. Comer, C T. Rix, J. Harley, C. Higginson, N Barker (Christchurch), and A. Bell. At the cemetery, the following members of the Masonic Lodge bore the casket to the graveside:—Wor. Bros. F. A. Joynt, A. E. Smith, L. A. Nicholas, R A. Lyall and Bro. G. Hancox. Wor. Bro. R. A. Lyall read the Masonic burial service after which the brethren filed round the graveside and dropped sprigs of acacia on the coffin. Many organisations with which the late Mr Hughes was connected we e represented. The Mayor, who was unavoidably absent, was r:presentcJ by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan). Others present were: Mr G F. Kennedy (Midland Dairy Company) , Mr J. C. South (South Canterbury Picture Company), chairman and directors of t’ j Milford, Clandeboye, Cloverlea and Orari Dairy Companies, Messrs H. Talbot, S. W. Booth and Captain V. C. Bunce (St. Peter's Choir), Mr W. H. Staniland (South Canterbury Calf Export Committee). Mr G. Gudson (Winchester Lime C<. npany), Mr A. Bell (Public Trust), Ml W. Rollinson (Queensland Insurance) and Mr T. L. Bussell (Temuka Progress League). Many members of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society v.'ere also present. SWIMMING OPENING MEETING Arrangements were completed foi the opening of the season when the Temuka Amateur Swimming Club’s committee met on Monday. Horwell to act as starter, and also the South Canterbury Swr iming Centre to appoint judges for swimming events. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Buzan. will declare the season open, and public bodies will be invited to attend. It was decided to write letters ot symapthy to the re’.-lives of the late Messrs B. Hughes and C. S. Fraser. BOBBY CALVES According to figures supplied yesterday by : South Canterbury Calf Export Committee, the total number ol bobby calves collected to date Is 42-3, as agrinst 4049 for .the corresponding period last year. The number collected on Monday was 80. METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD A very successful Bring and Euj afternoon organised by the 'tethodist Ladies G- <’:l wee held in the Denmark Street Hall. Mrs H. G. Brown presided. The programme, arranged by Mesdames E. Blackmore and Elder, was as follows:—Solos, Mrs Magee; a story without words, “The Tragedy of

the Lighthouse,” Mesdames Elder. \V. Buck, E. Blackmore, C. Bell and Smith Competitions were Wv_n by Mesdames S. Shepherd and M. McCully. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs J De Renzy, who gave an interesting talk on her trip to the South Sea Islands. Afternoon tea was served b 5 Guild members.
