Voluntary Work Appreciated Meeting Of Board In connection with the Emergency's Committee's work, stated the medical superintendent. Dr. J. C. McKenzie, in his report to the monthly meeting ol the South Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday, the Tlmaru Hospital was indebted to two committees, one working under the Mayoress, Mrs W. G. Tweedy, and another under Mesdames C. A. Paterson and R. D. King. Dr. McKenzie reported that there had been a fair amount of minor sickness amongst the nursing staff. He recommended that the following house surgeons be appointed next year: Seniors, Drs. A. H. North and Mclver; junior. Dr. W. Williams. He had tentatively arranged that Mr Pearson act as relieving technician at the laboratory during Mr Ward’s annual leave for one month. Stocks of ward and theatre requirements were now well up and sufficient to cope with extra demands. In referring to the two committees the chairman said that they had done so much work that the matron. Miss M. L. Lindsay, was up-to-date with all her sewing. Fairlie Hospital: A quotation of £296 was received from Briscoe and Co. for re-roofing the Fairlie Hospital with cement tiles.—Recommendation: That the price be accepted and the work proceeded with. Medical Officer, Fairlie Hospital: Dr. M. S. Wells has notified his acceptance of the offer of appointment at medical officer. Fairlie Hospital. Balance sheet for year ended March 31. 1939: The Controller and AuditorGeneral has returned the Board’s balance-sheet certified as correct. Treatment of Army sick and wounded: The Director-General of Health forwarded particulars regarding the procedure to be followed in connection with the treatment of Army sick and wounded and indicated that the War Expenses Account would pay 5/- per day, In addition to the Social Security payment of 6/- per day. making a total of 11/- per day to be accepted by boards in full satisfaction of their claim.

Surgical block: The architects, Messrs Turnbull and Rule, forwarded final certificate for payment of £260 15 6 to the contractors.—Recommendation: That the final payment be made.

Medical certificates: Recommendation that in future a claim of 2/6 be made for medical certificates issued in respect of insurance claims. Fees for remission: Fees amounting to £11.647/11/1 on account of Tlmaru Hospital were written off. Accounts for solicitors: The secretary was instructed to place 15 accounts in the hands of the Board’s solicitors for action. House Committee’s recommendations as follows were approved: Furnishings Trinity Manse. £475/11/-; salary increase £2O. Sister Hamilton, Temuka; requisition for wringers and repairs to old Maternity Ward floor, Timaru Hospital. The report was adopted. House Committee On behalf of the House Committee, Mr B. R. Macdonald reported that the secretary <Mr H. G. Naylor) had submitted a schedule of the furniture required for the former Trinity Church manse which the Board had purchased in order to provide accommodation for the nurses. The estimated cost of the furniture was £475/11/-. The Board had received an offer of the sale of a section adjoining the Old People’s Home. Further inquiries were being made. Mr E. C. Watson had been appointed manager of the Timaru Hospital laundry. Old People’s Home The master of the Old People's Home (Mr E. Laverty) reported that there were 33 inmates in October, compared with 38 in October, 1938. Thanks were due to the following for gifts: Mrs Toop (Pareora). Mrs O’Leary, and Mr Hammond. clothing; Ernest Adams. Ltd., cakes; Mrs Sommerville, magazines; Salvation Army, “War Cry”; “Christian Science"; Mrs Wilkie, magazines, and Mr E. Ley, periodicals. The report was adopted. The meeting was attended by the chairman. Mr E. Macdonald. Mrs B. Hewson, Dr C. A. Paterson, Messrs W. H. Hall. C. Ley. B. R. Macdonald. H. J. Clark. J. Dempsey, G. G. Rich and J. C. Hay.
