WOMEN’S DIVISION
SOUTHBURN BRANCH Mrs J. Chamberlain presided at the monthly meeting of the Southburn branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. On account of the war and the petrol shortage it was decided not to hold meetings until further notice. In response to the Makogai leper appeal, it was decided to forward a donation. Mrs Chamberlain expressed her thanks to all who helped to make the birthway party a success. After an address by Miss R. Chamberlain, secretary of the local branch of the Red Cross, it was decided to form a centre. During the afternc n two competitions for prizes by Mrs Chamberlain were won by Misses C. Gibson and M. Caird, while Miss H. Murray was the winner of a prize given by Mrs Bell. Mrs R. Parry gave a recitation and Mrs P. Murray an amusing reading. FAIRLIE BRANCH Mrs Patton presided over a fair attendance of member.” at the monthly meeting of the Fairlie Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Invitations to birthday parties were received from Mt. Nessing and Ashwick Flat. The success of the recent community sing organised by the branch was commented on by Mrs Patton. It was decided to continue meetings as usual. One new member was elected. A competition was won by Mrs Fahey. Mrs L. J. Wareing reported on the Red Cross meeting held in Fairlie, at which she had represented the branch. A reading on the life of Katherine Mansfield was given by Mrs W. M. Black. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs S. P. Bray and Miss Binney.
