CAUGHT WITH SPOIL
SMART WORK BY POLICE WELLINGTON, June 22. During the early hours of this morning, acting on certain information, a police party went to Ngahauranga Gorge in a police car. followed by further members of the force. At a point w-here Public Works men were tipping spoil, they came upon a Barton Ginger van. They also arrested a man. Thomas Gordon, aged 37, a labourer and taxi driver, on a charge of breaking and entering Barton Ginger's premises in Dixon Street and committing theft and also with unlawfully converting a motor-van valued at £260. The police allege that Gordon was engaged, at the time of his arrest, on a safe which had been blown open. He was s’ veiling some material which was on fire, and beside the fire they discovered a large quantity of gelignite, detonators and housebreaking instruments. When he saw the police, it is alleged he bolted and was subsequently taken in the bush. A remand was made till June 28.
