HIGH STANDARD FIELD

South Canterbury Championship Wright, Mackay and Ussher Included Draw For All Events With some of the Dominion's foremost golfers in the field the Highfield course should be the venue for a battle royal on Monday when the South Canterbury amateur golf championship is to be played. A handicap tournament on Saturday and Sunday will provide the preliminaries to the championship and the entries for all events are very encouraging. Approximately 125 players will be engaged. The senior championship has attracted 27 players, the intermediate championship 40 and the junior championship 24, while the handicap events are well patronised. J. L. Mackay, who has recently returned from Wellington will defend his title. He has been playing on various courses in the Wellington district and his 72 at Highfield on Saturday is an indication that he is playing well. Mackay can always be relied upon to figure prominently in any golfing picture. G. A. Ussher, semi-finalist in the New Zealand amateur championship and runner-up in the South Island championship, has strong claims to the title. His scores this season at Highfield have been the best in the club's history, and good enough to win a major event. B. V. Wright to Compete B. V. Wright, present South Island champion and a former New Zealand amateur champion, defeated Ussher in the former event at Invercargill at Easter. He is one of the most polished exponents of the game in the Dominion. His knowledge of Highfield where he learned his golf will be a great advantage to him when he takes his place in Monday’s field. Another visitor who should give a good account of himself is M. R. Blank of Wamairi, the promising son of A. R. Blank who is well known to golfers in South Canterbury. With his father he recently won the Canterbury foursomes championship. Another Waimairi player who will compete will be D. B. L. Boker, who is one of Canterbury’s promising younger brigade ’..ho figures consistently in competition events.

From North Otago comes M. J. Wilson, who has been Club champion there for three years in succession. He is another young player who has a golf future. He may be handicapped by lack of knowledge of the course. If Wilson is not in the winning list he should collect an open title before he is much older. Other visiting players who are on low handicaps will include F. S. Avent (Dunedin), J. R. Nicholson (Waitikiri) and J. R. Mills (Russley), while Highfield players who are capable of upsetting calculations include D. J. McBeath, E. A. Scott, E. G Kerr, junr., P. S. Sinclair, M. T. Houlihan, D. Moyes and W. C. Davies. An even lot will line up for the intermediate and Junior championships which are always full of interest.
