ITALIAN BUDGET DEFICITS

Bigger Burdens of Debit

Expenditure Rapidly Increases Costliness of Empire Building Heavier Taxation Likely United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 31, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says: Additional figures quoted by the Italian Minister of Finance (Signor Direvel) further indicate the sketchiness of the Budget. Signor Direvel admitted a probable deficit of £70,000.000 in the current year, whereas the estimates showed a surplus of £32,000,000. He asserted that the deficit was due to civil requirements, debt charges and Libyan expansion, but he anticipated additional extraordinary expenditure would bring the uncovered total to £173,000.000. He hoped, nevertheless, to produce a Budget covering the entire Imperial expenditure by means of effective taxation.
