INCREASE OF 219
Motor Registrations LAST DAI’ RUSH OF APPLICANTS There was the customary last-minute rush to register motor vehicles at the Timaru Post Office yesterday, the last day before it is compulsory for all motor vehicles to bear the 1939-1940 number plates, and the officials had a very busy day. Although there has been a steady demand for registrations during the last week or so, the staff was not obliged to work at high pressure until yesterday. Special provision was made for the office to be open on the last three evenings, but very few motorists availed themselves of the opportunity, so the officials spent the time profitably in attending to work which could net be handled so conveniently with the steady arrival of applicants throughout the day. Up till the close of business yesterday a total of 2862 vehicles had been registered, compared with 2643 up till the same date last year, an increase of 219. However, up till June 4, 1938, 3044 vehicles of all descriptions were registered, which leaves only 182 to be accounted for.
Up till yesterday 2110 cars had been registered, compared with 1919, an increase of 191 c.i last year’s figures, while trade vehicles showed 454 registrations, compered with 449 in the previous year. An increase of 35 registrations took place under miscellaneous veins’, is, which include service cars, omnibuses, taxis and dealers cars. The number c motor cycle registrations has again showed a decrease, the number falling item 103 last year to 91 fcr the comm . year. This decline has been a feature of the registrations for a number of years past, which indicates that motor-cycles are not retaining the popularity of some years ago.
