Artisans From Britain VARIETY OF OCCUPATIONS By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 31. Seeking employment in New Zealand in a variety of occupations, more than 50 British tradesmen arrived from London by the Rimutaka. Several said that they fc-.d left England with the prospects of positions in the Dominion, but the great majority had heard of the labour shortage in New Zealand and decided to make tb» voyage and take their chance of obtaining work. Representing 14 distinct trades and professions ranging from labouring to photography and commercial art, 29 of those who landed at Auckland were interviewed on board the liner by the State Placement Officer, Mi- J. R. Elsbury. The list Included five carpenters, four cabinet makers, three motor m"-’ tnies, th~-» joiners and two farm labourers. It is anticipated that there wiil be no difficulty in placing the men in employment. Three women were also included in the party. Landing at Auckland they gave details of their qualifications to State Placement Service in a hope of obtaining immediate employment. A number of the workmen said that they had heard in Britain that the New Zealand Government proposed to bring men from England under a subsidised passage scheme. This had suggested to them that there must be ample work i- the Dominion and they had decided to travel before other men were sent from England under contract.
