PLEASANT POINT
YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Pleasant Point Young Farmers' Club when a lecture on “The Nutrition of the Breeding Ewe’’ was given by Mr B. L. Elphick, an advisory president of the club. Mr Elphick said that many of the present-day difficulties in rearing lambs could be attributed to improper feeding of the breeding ewe. Adequate winter feeding would result not only in a higher lambing percentage but also in a quicker maturing lamb. He explained the relative feeding values of various types of sheep feed and said that crops such as swedes and mangolds, while being satisfactory for the maintenance of store sheep, were inadequate for the breeding ewe. A small ration of more concentrated food such as lucerne hay. oats, peas or meat-meal fed in conjunction with the root crop was recommended as more nearly fulfilling the requirements of the breeding ewe. Mr Elphick answered a large number of questions and was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Mr D. France.
