RIFLE SHOOTING
TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB
The final match of the season was fired on Saturday afternoon by the Timaru Defence Rifle Club. Conditions were seven shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards. When shooting commenced at 500yds conditions were good with a steady breeze off the sea. Possibles were scored by E. Healy, Taylor, Duncan and J. M. Smith. In going back to 600yds conditions changed to a hard light making sighting difficult, Taylor and Kenealy scored 33 each. At the short range scoring was more even but the light again affected the scores. The trophies were won by J. Green from A. Mcßeath, with M. Healy third. All scoring 100. The shoot-off between L. G. Smith and J. M. Healy was ■won by the former and he takes the special prize for the highest score in the service matches. A teams match between the town and country members resulted in a tie both sides scoring 933.
THE OTAGO MEETING (By .303) The Otago rifle meeting was very popular, 161 competitors taking part. The competitors included 22 men from also the New Zealand champion. CapTimaru. under president R. H. Parker, tain W. N. Masefield, of Blenheim. Prominent competitors were R. Bruce
(Kiwi), A. A. Ford (Invercargill), D. F. Keir (Christchurch), R. J. Gillick (Kiwi), C. Kibblewhite (Tapanui), J. T. Gillin (Dunedin), H. Koppert (Oamaru), R. M. Milley (Invercargill), Major J. Mackenzie (Wakatipu). N. McWilliams (Invercargill), E. Porter (Ashburton), F. C. Hodge (Sydenham). R. K. Johnston (Kiwi), O. G. M'iller (Dunedin), J. T. Munro (Mataura), all old patrons of the Otago rifle meeting. Mrs J. B. Doake, of Invercargill, was again the only lady competitor at the meeting.
The meeting opened with the Southland Match of ten shots at 300 yards. The shoot was won by D. F. Heir, of Christchurch, with a possible 49. and his board read 4. 5,5, 5. 5. 5,5, 5, 5. 5 —49. F. V. Healey, of Timaru, was second. Some exceptionally good shooting took place in the Canterbury Match, there being nine possibles. The leading Timaru man was W. Malcolm, with 49. In the Central Otago Match of ten shots at 600 yards, W. E. Jones was the first Timaru man, being seventeenth on the list, with a score of 47. T. V. Healey, Timaru, scored 46 in the Tyro Match and E. M. Healey did well in the Junior Match with 44.
The Otago Match of ten shots at 300 yards was won by R. J. Gillick, of Kiwi, with a possible 50. F. J, Black. Timaru, was twenty-second with a score of 47. In the Tyro Match. J Hedley. Timaru, gained second place with 47. T. V. Healey, Timaru, scored 47 to win the Junior event.
The North Otago Mat.h of ten shots at 500 yards revealed three possibles and 30 with scores of 49. E. Brehaut. Timaru. was the first 49 to count and gained fourth place. In the South Canterbury Match of ten shots at 600 yards. J. Lunn secured first place with the only possible, and J. M. Healey was the first Timaru man to appear in the prize list, scoring 47 to take twenty-first place.
