SWAMP BRIDGED
ROAD PASSABLE IN ALL WEATHER By rpipernph association PALMERSTON N„ April 15. Built at a total cost of £83,000, including the road approaches, a concrete trestle bridge over the Whirokino Swamp, south of Foxton, was opened by the Minister of Public Work; (the Hon. R. Semple). The trestle is the second lenges concrete structure of its kind in the Dominion, being of ninety spans, each of forty feet, the longest of the type being the Rakaia River bridge in Canterbury. The construction of the trestle provides an all-weather route on the important Wellington-Auckland highway. On numerous occasions in the past floods have seriously interrupted traffic. Plans are under wry for a new bridge over the river at the southern end. the trestle replacing the old Humpback Bridge.
