FOOTBALL HOME REFEREES FAVOURED

Representative Games

Rugby Union Discussion Preference for the control of representative w matches by home referees was shown by the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last night, when, following the receipt of a remit from the Thames Valley Association that referees should be appointed by the home union in all matches, a motion that South Canterbury should forward a remit to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union to the effect that outside men should be appointed was heavily defeated. After the remit had been read Mr Sullivan moved that the South Canterbury Union should advocate that all interprovincial matches should be controlled by outside referees, the home unions to pay the expenses. Action on those lines was hardly fair to local referees, said Mr Hewitt.

Last year the argument was advanced that the local referees’ appointment board knew the best men and would appoint them, said Mr Jackson. Certainly the appointment of outside referees would be a slur on the local referees.

Mr Sullivan objected that it would not be any reflection on the local men as they would obtain outside games. Mr Jackson: How often? The best method was that used in the past when the appointment board submitted three names to the visiting team, said Mr Rippin. If Ranfurly Shield matches were controlled by different rules from those that the remit would affect the South Canterbury Union should support the Thames Valley remit, said Mr O’Halloran.

Mr Sullivan’s motion was lost by eight votes to one, but it was decided toygive the Union’s delegates a free hand in the matter.

The following committees were appointed: Finance, Messrs W. Harte, C. W. Keinan, A. C. Rippin, A. D. Jackson; flag, Messrs A. C. Rippin, S. H. Sullivan, D. S. Loder, R. O’Halloran; entertainment, Messrs C. L. Cutler, S. H. Sullivan, F. S. R. Thomson, D. M.

Webster; permit, Messrs J. Lewis, F. Pearce, C. E. Ford;; emergency, Messrs W. Harte, A. C. Rippin, C. L. Cutler, D. J. Hewitt, A. D. Jackson. Mr Harte extended a welcome to Mr Hewitt as a member of the management committee. Sympathy was expressed with Mi’ A. H. Clemens in the death of his mother.

Match With Poverty Bay

The Poverty Bay Union inquired into the possibility of a game against South Canterbury in the course of its southern tour in June. It was proposed to play Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland with a possible further game. The date suggested for the game at Timaru was June 5. It was decided to agree to the match on a 50-50 basis.

The Ashburton Rugby Union asked if the match against South Canterbury could be played earlier this season. The matter was left to the selectors for a recommendation as to the most suitable date.

The secretary of the National Physical Fitness Campaign thanked the Union for its co-operation during Fitness Week in February. Mr Cook mentioned that entries would close on Saturday, and that it would be necessary for the flag committee to make the draw over the week-end for submission to the management committee for approval next Monday.

There were present Messrs W. Harte (president), A. D. Jackson, A. C. Rippin, D. J. Hewitt, F. S. Thomson, R. O’Halloran, D. S. Loder, D. M. Webster and S. H. Sullivan..
