GERALDINE SCHOOL BREAK-UP

Visit of Father Christmas Programme Approved Father Christmas will arrive at the Geraldine primary school at 1 p.m. next Wednesday and will distribute gifts to the infants. At 1.30 p.m. girls will parade in garments made at the dress-making class and drill displays by primary, intermediate and secondary pupils will follow. After a maze march by pupils from Std. 11l up, the presentation of prizes will take place, after which the school will b® open for a display of work. This programme, which was presented by th? headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine District High School Committee, was approved by the members. In the absence of the chairman, Mr J. Baguley presided. Letters were received from Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., and the Mayor (Mr J. R. Lack) accepting the committee’s invitation to attend the break-up. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board advised that the committee’s application for dress-making equipment had been forwarded to the department. The resignation of Miss Walker, infant mistress, was accepted with regret. As a parent who had children in her class, Mr N. S. Watt, said he was sorry that Miss Walker was leaving. Other members also expressed regret. Headmaster’s Report The headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) reported that the attendance at the primary department was 244 and the secondary department 71. Geraldine had been the centre for Public Service Entrance and University Entrance examinations, both of which were now completed. Marjorie King, a pupil of Form 11, had won the St. Margaret’s College open boarding scholarship, open to any Std. IV girl under the age of 13. Mr McGuigan said the school’s share in the recent benefit picture had amounted to £B/8/6 and a cheque from Mr Knight for this amount had been received. When the Board’s subsidy was added over £l2 would be available for the reference library. The chairman said the amount raised by the benefit picture was very satisfactory, and it was agreed that a letter be sent to Mr Knight expressing satisfaction at the amount raised, and the help it had been to the school. SUPERVISION AT BATHS WOMEN’S COMMITTEE FORMED To arrange a system of voluntary supervision at the Geraldine swimming baths a meeting of women members was held this week. Mrs A. J. Burmester presided. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs A. J. Burmester; secretary, Mrs F. W. Grayburn; club captain, Miss Morna Barrett; committee, Mesdames R. U. Richards, M. Bell, D. E. Nutsford, F. W. Morgan, J. J. McGuigan, A. H. Stringer, H. A. Robertson, J. R. Hawcridge, L. S. R. King, Geo. Watts, E. J. Wood, E. Broad, and Miss Joan Lapthorn. It was agreed to draw up a schedule of duties and a timetable for supervisors. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY PEEL FOREST MEETING Entries for Mr J. M. H. Tripp’s challenge cup for school gardens, and Mrs J. M. H. Tripp’s challenge cup for cottage gardens and the Commander Dennistoun challenge cup for vegetable gardens, were received at a meeting of the Peel Forest Horticultural Society. Mrs E. S. Elworthy was appointed judge of the gardens, with another judge to be appointed by herself. It was agreed to visit the gardens early in December and in the first week in February, and to announce the results at the summer show to be held early in February. A number of new prizes were added to the summer show schedule and Mr R. Morrison, Geraldine, kindly offered a medal and Mrs J. Parr a substantial prize to encourage children to exhibit vegetables. ST. BARNABAS GUILD BAZAAR MONEY ALLOCATED Money raised at a recent bazaar was allocated to benevolent societies and missions at a meeting of the Peel Forest St. Barnabas Guild on Thursday. The president, Mrs J. Aciand presided. A very Interesting letter from Miss Beryl Stevens who is still doing missionary work in China was read by Mrs J. M. H. Tripp. A competition was won by Miss E. McCully. Those present at the meeting were the president, Mrs J. Aciand and Mesdames J. M. H. Tripp, S. Uprlchard, Haines, H. Locke, F. Reid, D. Morrison, O. Keen, G. Wooding, W. Inglis, C. Wooding and the Misses E. McCully, D. Brook, R. and J. Reid. MACHINE GUN SECTION FIRST NIGHT PARADE The first night parade of the newly formed Geraldine machine gun section of the New Zealand Territorial Force will be held at the Presbyterian Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday next. Several Geraldine men enlisted at a recent whole-day parade of the Support Company, and if the strength of the

Geraldine Group can be increased to 15 men, the district will be able to have its own fully organised and equipped machine gun unit. Major G. R. Lee will be present at the parade and it is understood that interested citizens have been invited to attend to receive information and to discuss the formation of the group. The enlistment of some eight to 10 additional men is required, the ages being 18 to 32, and the minimum heigut sft sins. “THE GHOST GOES WEST” Robert Donat, the handsome young English actor who rose to fame overnight when he was brought to Hollywood to play “The Count of Monte Cristo,” makes his latest appearance in “The Ghost Goes West,” Alexander Korda’s gay romantic comedy whicu is being screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night. Jean Parker and Eugene Pallette head the supporting cast. The story follows the amazing and amusing adventures of a handsome and amiable "spook” who haunts an ancient Scottish castle. NOTES Late night for Christmas and New Year will be observed on Friday of each week. The Pleasant Valley Tennis Club are holding a dance in the Pleasant Valley Hall to-night. The Gapes Valley School concert and dance will be held in the Gapes Valley Hall on Wednesday, December 11, at 8 p.m. The Orari School prize-giving will be held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday, December 15, at 1 p.m. A dance will commence at 8.30 p.m. Father Christmas will be present at the Children’s Christmas party to be held in the Peel Forest Hall on Saturday, December 17, at 8 p.m. There will be a dance to follow. All members and families of the Waihi and Victoria Lodges are requested to attend a social evening on Saturday, December 17, at 7.30 p.m. in the Oddfellows Hall. Services in the parish of Geraldine including afternoon services at Gapes Valley and Kakahu are advertised on Page 2.
