FAIRLIE HOLIDAYS FIXED

Christmas and New Year Period Friday Late Night Holidays to be observed in Fairlie over the Christmas and New Year period, were fixed yesterday by the businessmen’s committee of the Citzens’ Association, and will be the same as those in Timaru. A late night will be kept on Friday, December 23, and on the following day, shops will be open until noon, and will not re-open until Wednesday, December 28, The same arrangement will apply to the New Year holidays. The late night will be on Friday, December 30, the half-day on the Saturday, and shops will not re-open until Wednesday, January 4. It is understood that a section of the business people were in favour of a Saturday late night. SWIMMING SEASAN The Fairlie Swimming Club’s season will open this afternoon with a carnival. , - large number of competitors are expected from other South Canterbury Clubs. The opening has been delayed owing to renovation work •at the baths, and that has now been completed, and a great improvement effected. POLO GYMKHANA Arrangements arc well in hand towards making the Pareora Polo Club’s Gymkhana at Fairlie on January 2, an outstanding success. There will be an extensive athletic and sports programme, a number of pony trotting events, and various novelty games in addition to an exhibition polo match. In view of the picnic nature of the outing, hot water will be supplied free.

“THE LADY FIGHTS BACK” “The Lady Fights Back,” a story based on Arthur Stringer’s novel “Heather of the High Hand,” will be screened at the DeLuxe Theatre, Fairlie to-night. The story deals with the highly amusing battle of Irene Hervey, pretty girl manager of a fashionable fishing club on a river in the north woods, to keep Kent Taylor, handsome young engineer, from building a dam that will spoil the fishing paradise. A March of Time short is included in the programme.
