WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ORARI Mrs W. Hughes (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute. Arrangements were made for the annual picnic to be held at Waihi Bush in January. Mrs G. Tagg, Geraldine gave a very fine demonstration of cake icing and answered many* questions. Miss Unwin proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Tagg for her instructive demonstration. Mrs Geo. Marshall a new mefnber, was proposed and welcomed in the usual manner. Competitions resulted—Bowl: Mrs Cone 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Smith 3; bloom, Mrs W. Hughes 1 and2, Mrs Finnell 3; Christmas present, not to cost more than 1/-, Mrs Wade 1, Miss Gerard 2, Mrs Bennett 3; miniature Christmas cake, Mrs F. Hughes 1, Mrs Smith 2, Miss Gerard and Mrs Finnell (equal) 3. HUNTER There was a good attendance of members at the December meeting ft the Hunter Women’s Institute, over which Miss A. Cooper presided. A welcome was extended to the visitors. It was decided to combine with the school committee in holding a picnic and also to give a donation. Mrs F. Mcßae (voluntary organiser), gave a talk on the work of Institute officers. Congratulations were extended to Mrs ’Wallace on her appointment to the Federation. As delegate to the meeting at Makikihi, Mrs Wallace gave her report on proceedings there. The roll call was "A Christmas Wish.” Play reading was presented by Mesdames Ayrey, W. Gibson, C. Gibson, Wallace, Misses Wilks and Richards. Two duets were sung by Mrs Mcßae and Miss M. Clelland. Mrs Bell was accompaniste. The visitors judged the competitions, which resulted—Rose, Mrs Manson 1, Miss Manson 2; chocolate sponge, junior, Miss Jackson 1, Miss Richards 2; bloom, Mrs Turner 1, Miss Richards 2; Richlieu work, Miss A. Cooper 1, Miss Anstey and Miss A. Cooper (equal) 2; Christmas gift, 2/6, Mrs Prattley and Miss Manson (equal) 1, Miss Anstey and Miss A. Cooper (equal) 3. OTIPUA There was a splendid attendance of members and friends at the December meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute, which took the form of a surprise “Gift Afternoon” in honour of Miss May Walter who is shortly to be married. Miss Coughlan presided. Correspondence was dealt with and it was agreed to send letters of congralation to Mrs M. P. Mills and Mrs Kelland (Fairview). The resignation of Miss May Walter was received with much regret. It was decided to donate £1 to the W.1., Depot in Tirnaru. Mrs Hill gave a brief account of the Federation meeting held at Makikihi, and Miss Coughlan reported on the Group meeting held at St. Andrews, for which they were accorded a vote of thanks.

The forthcoming Torchlight Revue was discussed and it was decided to assist with expenses. The annual picnic was also discussed and it was decided to hold it on Caroline Bay on January 4. Mrs Stewart (Fairview) gave a very interesting demonstration on egg-shell mosaic, and parchment work, and displayed Christmas gifts done with her work. On the motion of Mrs Vincent she was accorded a vote of thanks for her excellent work. Mrs Arden, Miss Alma Stowell and Miss Monica Coughlan gave a very interesting account of the W.1., trip to Queenstown which was held recently. Miss Walter was then called upon to receive her gifts, Mrs Simmons presenting her with a beautiful bouquet with the best wishes of the Institute. Mesdames Vincent, Purvis, Lunham and Misses M. Coughlan and N. O’Donoghue. spoke on behalf of the Institute, and Miss Walter suitably replied. Hostesses for the month were—Mesdames P. and R. Campbell, H. Caldwell and Miss D. Bell.

Campbell 3; six largest gooseberries, Miss Ivy Stowell 1, Mrs’R. Jackson 2, Mrs Stowell 3; sultana cake, seniors, Mrs P. Campbell 1, Mrs R. Jackson 2, W. Black 3; juniors, Miss M. Walter 1, Miss N. O’Donoghue 2, Miss M. Coughlan 3; premier bloom seniors, Mrs R. Jackson 1, Mrs R. Rooney 2, Mrs Hill 3; juniors, Miss Coughlin 1, Miss A. Stowell 2, Miss Ivy Stowc’.l and Miss May Walter equal 3. ESK VALLEY Mrs Bishop presided over the December meeting of the Esk Valley Institute. The secretary Mrs L. Mills read a letter of thanks from Mr Twomey for the donation to the Makogai Leper Fund. It was unanimously decided to send donations to the Mayor of Tirnaru (Mr W. G. Tweedy) for the Chinese Refugee Fund and to the Depot and tea rooms in Tirnaru. It was decided to join in with St. Andrews for the Christmas party, Esk Valley Institute providing their own gifts. A motion of thanks was passed to St. Andrews Institute for their invitation to be present. A letter was read from Mrs Mills thanking Institutes for the honour they had bestowed on her by electing her president of the newly-formed Waimate Federation. The forthcoming torch light pageant and the support desired from each Institute was then discussed. It was decided to give a donation towards i avelling expenses if necessary. After afternoon tea served by the hostesses Mrs L. Mills and Miss G. Sauer, Mrs Bishop said that it was with great regret that the committee had accepted the resignation of the secretary, Mrs L. Mills. During her

term of two years in office, Mrs Mills had proved herself a most efficient secretary and had done her work faithfully and without complaint. On behalf of the members, Mrs Bishop asked her to accept a pretty ornamental jug not for its intrinsic value, but as a token of the esteem in which she was held and the good fellowship which existed between the members.
