American Reply to Arms Race Most Powerful Ships Afloat Tenders for Construction United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 3, 9.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, November 2. Bids have opened and are considered satisfactory for the construction at private yards of three 35,000 ton battleships which, with the fourth being built at the navy yard, will cost approximately 280,000,000 dollars. This is greater than the original cost of al’, the battleships now in the fleet. Four new battleships will be offensively equal, if not superior, to any comparable ships in the world. They will carry nine 16inch guns and their speed will exceed 25 knots. The Navy Department also announced the modification of the ban on rigid airship building, permitting the Immediate construction for training and developmental purposes, of a metal covered airship 325 f cet in length with a gas capacity of 1,000,000 cubic feet. It will cost 3,000,000 dollars.
