WAIMATE MANCHESTER PARK

Improvements Being Effected Draining Playing Areas Improvements which it is hoped will be of considerable benefit to both players and spectators next football season, are being carried out by the Waimate Borough Council at Manchester Park. Better arrangements are being made for the draining of the playing areas, and realignment work has been carried out on the west bank of the park between the inner entrance gate and the grandstand. When this bank has consolidated sufficiently, it is considered that it will provide a drier surface for spectators at football matches. In the area round the grandstand, which is in a slight depression, new drains, have been installed, and these, it is considered, will carry away much of the surface water which lies in the area during the winter months. DRIVERS’ LICENSES INCREASE IN NUMBER An increase of 37 in the number of motor drivers’ licenses issued by the Waimate Borough Council so far this year, compared with the number issued during the same period last year, was reported yesterday by the Town Clerk (Mr B. S. Runciman). During October, 19 licenses had been issued, he said, bringing the total for the year to 452 compared with 415 for the corresponding period in 1937. In the period to the end of October last year, 58 heavy traffic licenses had been issued, and in the corresponding part of this year the same number had been issued. BUILDING ACTIVITY FEW HOUSES UNDER ERECTION Apart from the Government units, the first of which were started in May, very little house building work has been done in the Waimate Borough so far this year. In the period to the end of October last year, the Borough Council had granted permits for the erection of six houses, but ir the corresponding period this year only two permits have been granted. CRICKET WAIMATE TEAM The following players will represent the Waimate Cricket Club in the match against Tollers at Manchester Park to-morrow:—E. Chapman, A. Guy, D. Keyes, J. Balfour, R. Nolan, L. Austin, R. Lane, L. Foote, J. Liddle, A. Wilson, D. M. Webster, C. Richardson, and A. Carbis. Draw For Saturday The draw for the Waimate Cricket Sub-Association’s matches to be played to-morrow is as follows:—Waimate v. Toilers, at Manchester Park; Old Boys v. Morven, at Manchester Park; Redcliff a bye. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs C. C. Douglas, of “Korari,” Waimate, have returned after spending the last six months touring England and the Continent. Mr Ellis Mahan has left Waimate to take up a position in Palmerston North. Entries for the Waimate A. and P. Show have been extended to Monday next at 3 p.m.
