BOXING

Boys’ High School Championships Keenly Fought Bouts The standard of boxing displayed in the Timaru Boys’ High School annual championships, which were contested in the Assembly Hall yesterday afternoon, was a considerable improvement on that of the previous year. The bouts were keenly contested and the boys showed that they had a sound knowledge of the principles of “the noble art of self defence.” The winners proved the truth of the maxim that attack is always the best defence, and good tactics and footwork gave them the margin to win, although there was not much to choose between the young pugilists in several of the finals. A. D. McKenzie retained the school championship unopposed, as evidently his superior height and reach deterred any seekers after the title. W. J. Cleland, who won the Dr. Little Cup for the most scientific display, defeated T. Brown to win the A. Grade Open Section. At the close of the programme, the rector (Mr A. G. Tait), expressed the indebtedness of the School to the Timaru Boxing Association for the loan of material and for other assistance. Mr Tait, who expressed appreciation of the services of DetectiveSergeant E. Thomas and Mr S. Triggs as judges, and Mr T. Seager as referee, remarked that the School could not have conducted the competitions without the assistance of officers of the calibre who had been in charge that afternoon, and they greatly appreciated their help. Mr Tait referred to the very much improved standard of boxing, which reflected credit on the boys themselves and on their instructor, Mr J. Stewart. Mr Stewart had coached the majority of the competitors, and he was to be complimented on the type he had turned out. The School was indebted to him for the very fine display given that afternoon. The results were as follow: School champion: A. D. McKenzie (unopposed). A Grade (Open) First Round W. J. Cielland beat R. J. Ford . D. G. Watt beat B. A. Nelson. Semi-Final Cleland won from D. G.
