LAWN TENNIS RECORD ENTRIES

S.C. Lawn Tennis Association Annual Tournament At New Year The South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's tournament this season will be held at Timaru during the New Year holidays. Approval of such dates was received from the New Zealand Association at a meeting of the Association on Wednesday evening. Mr W. E. Renton presided. It was decided to admit an additional entry from the Baptist Club in the C grade. The entry was referred to the match committee. A letter was received from the St. Mary’s Club recommending that matches, particularly on club courts, should start by 1.15 p.m. on Saturdays. It was agreed to recommend that games be started not later than 1.30 and earlier if possible. The terms offered by G. Ollivier to coach juniors were accepted. It was decided to engage Ollivier for two weeks, the, match committee being empowered <to arrange the dates. Mr S. H. Sullivan said that through the arrangement it was probable that the usual number of entries for the junior tournament would be doubled. It was decided to approach the Temuka Town and Country Association with a view to its being reaffiliated and to draw attention to the advantage likely to be gained by its junior players through the coaching scheme. Special Meeting It was decided to call a special meeting of delegates at an early date, to discuss notices of motion from the Te Ngawai Sub-Association about the residential qualifications of delegates and alterations to the rules. Affiliation was granted the Technical College Old Students’ Association Club.

The match committee submitted a report which intimated that Al grade matches, for which there were four entries, be played in two series. In the A2 grade all matches would be played at Maori Park, except where country teams met, when the matches would be played on the home club courts. It was decided that the home team supply first-grade balls, and it was recommended that each player supply one pair in the Al section and that there be at least four pairs supplied in other grades. It was agreed that the attention of team captains be drawn to the rule relating to the no change in order of team unless agreed to by the opposing team’s captain. It was reported that 27 entries had been received for the competitions, compared with 25 last season.
