CONDITIONS IMPROVING Special to “The Timaru Herald." WELLINGTON, November 2. Winds—Light to fresh south-east to north-east. Weather—Cloudy to overcast and with drizzling rain at many places at first, but gradually improving; temperatures cool. Seas—Slight to moderate. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation A shallow secondary depression is crossing the North Island. An anticyclone is advancing across the Tasman Sea, but the highest pressure is in the south. Forecast Winds—North-west to westerly over the northern portion of the North Island, elsewhere southerlies to southeasterlies prevailing, force strong at first about Cook Strait, but otherwise light to fresh. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rough in the Cook Strait area, and rather rough on the West Coast of the North Island, elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea Moderate westerly winds at first in the northern portion, otherwise light to moderate south-easterlies prevailing. Seas—Slight to moderate. Weather—Cloudy to overcast and in places misty moderate rain or drizzle probable in many places, but little in the far north and south, improving to-morrow, temperatures cool. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: The weather yesterday was cloudy until late in the afternoon when the sun shone for a short time. Light showers fell in the morning and there was a light north-easterly wind. The maximum temperature was 54.3 degrees, and the barometer at 5 pm. was steady at 30.102 inches. Geraldine: Cold southerly rain throughout the day. Temuka: Overcast and rather bleak conditions prevailed in Temuka thrroughout the day yesterday, when a light wind from the north-east brought two light showers. The lowest temperature recorded was 44 degrees, and the highest 54. Late in the evening the glass was rising. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 am. yesterday): Thermometer, maximum 51, lowest 45, grass minimum 42.5; rain 46 points; bright sunshine, nil; wind gauge, miles run in previous 24 hours 64; rainfall to date, 1938, 32.72 in, 1937, 16.10 in. Steady rain overnight continued into yesterday morning, but cleared in the afternoon. The sky remained overcast. . Dunedin: The sky was dull and overcast all day yesterday and though rain threatened at times none fell. Temperatures were cool to mild, the maximum being 56 degrees. There was no wind and the barometer rose steadily to 30.21 inches.
