FAIRLIE UNWANTED RAIN

Other Years Compared Farm Work Delayed Unwanted rain has brought the year’s total to 28.42 inches with two months to go, and the year will very likely take a place amongst the wettest in the history of the Fairlie district. In 1934, there were 28.54 inches, according to measurements taken at “Lambrook,” and 1936 had 30.03 inches. Nevertheless, analysing the records, which go back to 1894, the heaviest fall for a year was 35.74 inches in 1902. Last year with 21.31 inches, was comparatively dry. This year, there have been two months with more than six inches, April 6.40 and July 6.02, and January had 5.22 inches. Only two months had less than an inches, May and August The following table shows the monthly figures over the past four years for comparison: —

Agricultural work has been hindered by the recent rain, which after the fall a little more than a week ago, was entirely unnecessary. Farmers are busy with spring crops, and in manycases, because of delay occasioned by the severe winter, are behind with their work. For stock and pastures, and the progress of farm work generally, sunshine would be welcomed. ENGINEER CONGRATULATED At the close of the Mackenzie County Council's last financial year, the engineer-clerk (Mr D. Jeune) prepared a booklet of diagramatic facts dealing with various county activities, and on request, he forwarded six copies to an indent firm in England, who have replied as follows: “The six copies of your booklet of diagrammatic facts concerning your county, duly reached us, and upon sending these to engineers of some of the principal English Councils, we have received most appreciative acknowledgments. Some of the Councils have returned the compliment by forwarding to us copies of their handbooks, and knowing that you would be interested to have them, we have posted them under separate cover.”

John Wayne, Marsha Hunt and John Back Brown head the cast of “Born to the West,” Paramount’s Zane Grey action romance. This double feature programme, which is being screened at the De Luxe Theatre to-night at 8 o’clock, is a benefit picture for the Fairlie School.
