Catalogue came to no harm in the Melbourne Cup race and will run either in the V.R.C. Handicap or the Fisher Plate on Saturday. Nuffield is slightly sore and will not race again until the autumn. The Trump will be given a long spell. The only other eight-year-old horse to win a Melbourne Cup was Tory Boyin 1865. Nimblefoot, Sheet Anchor. Tarcoola and Scrasia, all seven-year-olds, were the only other aged winners. Comrade and Libra were fatally injured in falls at Ascot to-day. The jockey. E. Preston, suffered a broken collarbone. W. Williamson suffered abrasions.

The Melbourne correspondent of “The Sydney Morning Herald,” in commenting on the Melbourne Cup, says: “Catalogue stunned the crowd at Flemington by winning the Cup with ease. The sole credit for his preparation rests with Mrs A. W. McDonald. Catalogue is the oldest horse to win the Cup for 73 years and the only other successful eight-year-old was Tory Boy, in 1865. Catalogue also created history by carrying the saddle-cloth number 5 to victory for the first time in the race. Catalogue gave his younger opponents a lesson in galloping. From three furlongs onward the race lacked excitement as it was apparent that Catalogue could not be beaten. Bourbon, who came from a long way back, may have had a chance had he been brought along sooner, but against that. Catalogue was never really extended and his reaction to a challenge could not be estimated.” Shean said that Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle all the way and was going so well that he never had any doubt that he would win. Royal Chief, who was favourite, never appeared to be going like a winner. Bartie said that the slow pace was against his mount.

A message from Pimlico (Maryland) states that Sea Biscuit defeated War Admiral by three lengths in a 15,000dollar match race, which has established Sea Biscuit as America’s best racehorse. The time, Imin 56 3-ssec, bettered the track record by a fifth of a second. Sea Biscuit’s earnings to date are 246,405 dollars.
