EDWARDIAN "HAIR-DO’S” False hair in the form of forehead fringes, chignons and plaits; flopcurl top-knots; hair dressed round, through and over hats, combs and headdresses, making hair and hat a single unit—these are the new things for which smart women in Paris go to their hairdresser. Evening combs are enormous. They rise like steep cliffs from prim, scarpedup coiffures which might have been worn by any Edwardian governess. And those wisps at the back? Well, you see lots of them. Women have not by any means regained the art of putting up their hair tidily. To help them out, keeping the short ends in place, are tiny bows of velvet, satin or soft kid, mounted on a clip or comb, to pin on to the backhair. Curls are permissible only for a topknot; they are large, loose and floppy. Provided the hair is correctly cut and your “permanent” at its subtlest best, the flop-curl top-knot is the easiest style of hair-do for many a season. Gather your hair up in one hand and hold it up firmly above your head, comb and brush it upwards until your head looks as smooth as a rabbit's held up by the ears. Stick in two small combs fore and aft of your crown, and two at each side. Then let the short curls cascade over. And about that false hair. An elaborate ensemble consists of the new flopcurl forehead fringe, joined to a swathe by a short length of plaited hair. The plait is worn down the centre back of the head, the swathe fastening in a swirl behind the left ear. As for colour, bleached hair and platinum effects are “out”; auburn, bronze and Titian tones are very much “in.”
