GOLF DRAMATIC FINISH
Locke Narrowly Beats Hornabrook Praise For New Zealand Champion By Telegraph—Pres? Association * MASTERTON, November 1. There was a dramatic finish to an exhibition golf match played on the Landsdowne links to-day between Bobby Locke, the touring South African and John Hornabrook, the New Zealand Open champion. At the fourteenth hole Locke, who had dominated play throughout, stood three up, but then the Masterton amateur staged a great recovery. He took the next two holes with birdie
threes, and equalised matters at the seventeenth when he sank a glorious 30 foot putt. Locke, who played like a machine, was within 10 feet of the pin with his second at the eighteenth, and he holed out to take the match 1 up. Both men played brilliant golf on good but difficult greens. The South African was coolness and confidence personified, and his only serious mistake of the match was at the 17th, when he missed a four foot putt. He did the 18 holes in 68, one stroke better than Gene Sarazen’s effort over the same course last year. Hornabrook took 70. Locke considers Hornabrook the most promising golfer he has seen in New Zealand.
