NEW INDUSTRIES
Council Keen to Assist Value to District It was gratifying to know that the Timaru Borough Council had encouraged the foundation of a new industry for South Canterbury, said the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy at the Main School reunion on Saturday night. In connection with the new water scheme, the Council had used every effort with the contractors to have the pipes manufactured in Timaru, said the Mayor, and while that had not been possible owing to the price of land the manufacture of the pipes was being done at Washdyke. That new industry was something really worth while to the district. “I cannot understand why there are not more industries at Timaru,” continued the Mayor. All forms of transport, sea, rail and road, were available and in a short time there would also be air transport, so that it was surprising that more manufacturing concerns had not started in the district. He expressed the hope that the pipe industry would be the forerunner of many more to be established. The Borough Council would co-operate in every way with schemes that would provide additional employment and revenue, and that would materially aid the progress of the town.
