LAWN TENNIS DAVIS CUP

Team Disappointed Interview With Hopman By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, October 28. “We are returning home a little disappointed, for although our tour has been fairly successful, we did not win the Davis Cup, and that is what we set out for.” This is the general opinion of the Australian Davis Cup team, as expressed by Hopman on his arrival by the Monterey. The returning party consists of Quist, Bromwich, Schwartz, Mrs Hopman, Misses Wynne, Coyne, and Stevenson. “We had a good chance of winning the Davis Cup, but bn the days of our important matches our opponents seemed just a little better,” Hopman continued. "To allay our disappointment, however, the fact that Donald Budge seems likely to turn professional will likely mean that we will take the honours for Australia in 1939.” Hopman said that Quist had been foot-faulted at a critical stage in the match with Budge. Except that it was unfortunate that it occurred at that stage of the game, Quist had no complaint to make, and thought the decision quite just. He had previously been foot-faulted against Riggs. He had tried to guard against a repetition in the doubles by standing back, and it came as a severe blow to him when faulted for jumping. He was so keenly interested in the gamp that he had not noticed. The incident had affected his game at the time. The Australians are playing exhibition matches in Auckland to-day. Exhibition Matches Following were the results of the exhibition matches played by the Australians:— Singles Miss N. Wynne beat Miss T. Coyne 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. H. Hopman beat A. K. Quist 6-3, 6-2. Mrs H. Hopman beat Miss D. Stevenson 6-3, 6-2. J. Bromwich beat A. D. Brown 6-0, 6-1. Doubles J. Bromwich and A. K. Quist beat H. Hopman and L. Schwartz 6-3, 6-4. L. Schwartz and Miss Coyne beat H. Hopman and Mrs Hopman 6-4, 6-2.
