WAIMATE WATER SUPPLY

Proposed Extension Motion To Raise £16,000 A motion to apply to the Local Government Loans’ Board for permission to borrow £16,000 to carry out extensive improvements to the Borough water supply will be considered by the Council at its next meeting. The work to be carried out includes the laying of an additional water main from the reservoir to the town, the relaying of part of the existing main from the intake to the reservoir, the improving of the reticulation in the b .-ough, and the provision of measuring appliances. It is proposed that the loan be secured by a special rate of 3d in the £1 on the unimproved value of all rateable property within the Borough. COLOURFUL SPECTACLE CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS The Olympia Hall presented a scene of colour and gaiety on Thursday night when the children of the Primary School presented their fancy dress carnival. There was an attendance of about 300 children, while the seating accommodation was taxed by the presence of hundreds of parents and friends of the school. The children entered whole-hearted-ly into the enjoyment of the evening and the marching, deportment and dancing of each group of pupils as they look the floor evidenced the careful training they had received. The display of the senior classes particularly showed the value of eurythmic training, which was apparent in the deportment of the pupils and in the lightness of their footwork. The headmaster (Mr J. L. Menzies) thanked all who had assisted in making the function a success, and expressed appreciation of the co-operation they had received from the parents. He made special mention of the work of the judges, Mrs A. G. Other prize winners ivere Roseann Englefield (80-peep), Jennifer Stewart (Queen of Hearts). HUNT CLUB MEETING OF COMMITTEE The committee of the Waimate Hunt Club met yesterday. Present—Messrs N. A. Rattray (chairman), F. G. Brown, C. C. Douglas, D. Macdonald, A. Medlicott, M. Cooney and J. C. Studholme. A resolution of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr E. Stokes, who had been a member of the club for a number of years. The secretary (Mr A. J. Hoskins) conveyed to the meeting the thanks of the Racing Club for the donation to the building fund. The Canterbury District Committee advised that in order to place the trust fund at a reasonable figure, it had been decided to request as annual contributions from each club an amount representing 6d in the £ of one fifth of the rebate on tolalisator tax. The levy on the Hunt Club for the 1937-38 season was £l/3/6. The secretary was instructed to forward the amount.

The annual meeting which was to have been held after the commitee lapsed through lack of a quorum, and it was agreed to call the annual meeting for November 18.

PERSONAL Mr and Mrs Stan Scott, Blenheim, have been staying with Mr and Mrs W. Stowell, Hook. Mr P. Hunter, Government traffic inspector stationed at Balclutha for the past 18 months, is being transferred to Waimate.
