SHEEP DOG TRIALS
GOOD PERFORMANCES There was close competition in the dog trials yesterday afternoon, and the wanner of the open trial, J. Martin’s Don, beat the dog in second place by one point. There w’ere 38 dogs entered in two classes, compared with about 19 last year. The judge, (Mr G. Evans Peel Forest) said the winner completed the whole course with a very fine display, his driving being excellent. Similar comment could be made about other prize-winners, which were very narrowly beaten. Again this year the poles on the course was the place where the most trouble w’as experienced. Conditions, because of the noise and the disturbances unavoidable in the show, w r ere not ideal for first class trial exhibitions, and the course was not at its best because of the recent rain. The stubbornness of the sheep also spoiled many otherwise good displays. The general standard, however, in spite of these adverse factors, was extremely high. The results were:— Open Class J. Martin (Cave), Don, 37 1 A. S. Ellis (Timaru-Waimate R.D.) Don, 36 2 J. Trotter (Kurow), Lass of Arran, 35i 3
Maiden Class R. M. Wilson (Kirwee), Maid, 38 .. 1 A. S. Ellis (Timaru-Waimate R.D.), 36 2 The three placed dogs in the open class yesterday will compete in the main ring this afternoon.
