LIGHT HORSES

SLIGHT DECREASE IN ENTRIES In commenting on the harness horses, cobs and ponies’ classes, the judge, Mr T. Carruthers (“Maypark”, Middlemarch), remarked that the decline in the number of entries from 228 last year to 208 this year was no doubt due to the Royal Show at Hamilton next week, which would attract competitors from throughout the Domniion. Mr Carruthers remarked that Mr T. H. Ivey’s Dan was easily the champion harness horse, and he had had no difficulty in making the first and second awards. Dan is a former Royal Show champion and has carried off a number of awards at Timaru for several years past, annexing the championship in 1937 and 1936. Mr Ivey was succesful in all the harness horse classes, including the best turn-out in harness, which he w T on with Dan. Mr Carruthers, who remarked that Messrs J. S. and R. B. Lilley had exhibited a very nice cob in Firearm, the champion harness pony, said that with a little more ring experience, he would be able to retain the honour which he had won against stronger competition in the future. Although the number of entries was smaller the standard of the competitors had been very creditable. There were only seven entries in the pony classes, but they were a good representative lot. Messrs J. S. Lilley and R. B. Lilley produce the champion single harness pony, over 13.2 hands and not over 14.2 hands, in Firelight. Miss Eleanor Hamilton’s Torchlight Tattoo secured the second award in that class, ana Mr Andrew Grant’s Pink Sugar was third. Miss Joan Williamson’s Trixie was awarded first prize for a single harness pony, 13.2 hands or under, in which there was no competition. Saddle pony and trotting events will be competed to-day.
