ATHLETICS

Coaching School Full Syllabus The South Canterbury Sub-Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association is leaving' nothing to chance, and is r aklng a determined effort to make the coaching school to be held in Timaru a real success. Mr A. L. Fitch tlte eminent American coach who is to control the coaching school is working in close contact with the Timaru officials. He is intensely interested in the effort, and he assured a member of the executive of the Sub-Centre that in his contact with athletes in Wellington and Canterbury he finds increasing interest in the school. . From other centres the same lively interest is being taken in the project, and the success of the school seems assured. Every effort is being made to reach as many athletes as possible, and every Centre and Sub-Centre in both Islands is being circularised giving the fullest details of the school and all its activities. Mr Fitch has stressed the point that he does not want the athletes to feel that they are coming to Timaru for a period of hard work 'of training and coaching. The direct opposite will be the case. The athlete has rather to feel that he is coming for a really enjoyable holiday with the advantage, and benefit of modern athletic coaching under one of the most experienced and efficient coaches that has ever visited the Dominion. Syllabus Drawn Up The syllabus for the week’s coaching has been drawn up on the lines giving those who are attending the school as much time for real enjoyment as possible. On most days coaching sessions will be held during the mornings and afternoons, all evenings being free. The system used by Mr Fitch will be by the "appointment system.” Athletes who will receive their coaching during the morning session will be free for the rest of the day, and those who attend the afternoon sessions will have the morning free. Every morning from 9 to 10 o’clock during the period of the school Mr Fitch will conduct lectures on moderntraining and coaching methods. These lectures will be assisted with moving pictures showing athletes in action. Opportunity for asking questions will be given. This session should be of interest to athletes who are particularly interested in training and coach-, ing systems. Details of Plan The syllabus has been framed with the view to giving athletes the opportunity of taking an active part in the different sports meetings in the district conducted during the period of the coaching school. Further, the controlling authorities are making ample provision for the visitors to have a thoroughly enjoyable stay in the most delightful holiday resort in the Dominion.
