BOXING

MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE Followers of boxing in Timaru will have another opportunity next week of witnessing a title contest when Cliff Hanham will defend his title against Stan Jenkin. The pair have already met, having fought an excellent contest at Dunedin this season, when Jenkin gained the decision on points. In that contest the Dunedin boxer showed great speed and boxing ability of a high standard, counteracting the Walmate boxer's hitting ability with clever ducking and footwork. To gain the decision Jenkin showed out in numerous fast two-handed attacks, and even if not so heavy a hitter as Hanham, he can, by his repeated and clean hitting, trouble an opponent. The Waimate boxer is deserving of great praise for his rapid rise in the professional ranks, and in his recent bout with George Allan he showed boxing ability well up to championship standard. Hanham is a fighter whose style appeals to followers of the sport, for he is an aggressive fighter, who can both give and take punishment. The action of the present middleweight champion in putting up his recently acquired title is deserving of great praise, and will no doubt further add to the popularity of the sport in this province. It is understood that the winner of next Tuesday night’s contest will be matched with Foster, the Canadian champion at present competing in New Zealand. Tentative offers have been received by both boxers from several associations for contests with the Canadian champion.

Reserves for the contest will open to-day at Oamaru, Walmate and Timaru.
