CHESS

South Canterbury Tournament Progress of Play Expectations that the South Canterbury chess championship tournament would reach the final stages on Tuesday night’s play were not realised, as several players standing high in the championship tables suffered upsets. C. E. Brunsien, who had not up till then suffered defeat in section B, went down to L. H. Tozer in a hardfought game, while W. J. Hlnchey, in the lead in section C, was beaten by W. Pearse, of Temuka.

J. T. O. Stephens v. W. Pearse— Stephens with black played the Vienna game and was a knight up early, but gave back his piece of advantage to win the exchange. Stephens built up a very strong attack which resulted in the capture of his opponent’s queen and rook, Pearse resigning. Stephens v. J. Flnkelston—From the buloco piano Stephens playing white was a knight up in the early stages, and later forked bishop and queen, forcing Finkelstein’s resignation. N. S. Traves v. Souter —In a Buy Lopez opening Traves was not long in gaining a knight advantage. Playing a fine open game he badly upset Souter’s game and his opponent was never able to gain the initiative, falling a victim to a solid mating attack. L. H. Tozer v. C. E. Brunsden—playing the guioco piano, Tozer obtained good development, but lost a pawn in opening exchanges. Tozer equalised with a rook and bishop attack on a double pawn, and after winning another pawn he exchanged off to win a hard-fought end game. W. Pearse v. J. W. Hinchey—From the Ruy Lopez an even game resulted until Hinchey lost his queen in a faulty manoeuvre, resigning shortly after. N. A. Moore v. C. E. Brunsden —With the white pieces Moore attacked Brunsden’s castled king, winning two pawns and threatening an early mate. At this critical stage Moore sportingly refused to force a positional draw, and Brunsden, by skilful manoeuvring, played his king to safety and counter-attacked, finally trapping the white queen. White resigned. Detailed Results Detailed results were:— Section B Brunsden beat Moore. L. H. Tozer beat C. E. Brunsden. N. S. Traves beat D. Souter. Section C W. Pearse beat J. W. Hinchey. J. T. O.
