Increase in A.A. Membership Meeting of Committee Forty-eight new members were elected to the Automobile Association (South Canterbury) at the monthly meeting of the committee last night, the secretary (Mr E. A. Scott) remarking that the position in regard to the membership was most satisfactory, and already 117 subscriptions had been paid for the financial year which would commence on November 1. The Roads Committee reported that 67 direction signs, 13 road symbols, 11 short and two long posts were required for erection throughout South Canterbury, and it was agreed that they be procured. Mr M. Patrick (Pleasant Point) wrote expressing appreciation of the services of the Patrol Officer (Mr F. T. Owers) In giving assistance. at the Geraldine races. The S.I.M.U. Mutual Insurance Association forwarded a cheque for £75 as a goodwill grant to the local Association. itecent Accidents Reference was made to two recent accidents which had occurred on the Main South Road at St. Andrews, and it was decided to raw the attention of the Main Highways Board ) the danger to traffic at this point, with the suggestion that the alignment of the curve be altered. Mr N. P. Nelson referred to a very narrow and dangerous bridge on the main road near Springbrook School, and it was decided to draw the attention of the Waimate County Council to the matter. The secretary of the South Island (N.Z.) Motor Union advised that arising out of the report of the secretaries’ meeting at Wellington, it had been decided that each Association pay for the road service rendered in its own district, irrespective of the domicile of the member assisted, and on the understanding that the . member receives the service 'operating in the particular district in which such service is given. Miss E. J. Crooks (Ashburton) advised that twice in one week she had re-directed visitors to South Canterbury to the correct route to Mt. Cook, via Geraldine and Beautiful Valley. In both instances the drivers had been misled by a sign just out of Geraldine. The secretary (Mi- E. A. Scott) intimated that he had replied to Miss Crooks thanking her for her letter. The patrol officer would check over the signs in that locality. Elephant Hill Creek Ford The District Highways Engineer (Mr T. Langbein), who wrote in regard to suggested improvements to the Elephant Hill Creek Ford between Waimate and Kurow, said that as the Waimate County Council had provided an all-weather route by constructing a bridge over the Elephant Hill River Canal it did not feel di. posed to entertain any expenditure on the ford. Appreciative reference was made to the services of the chairmen and members of the sub-committees responsible for the various functions in connection with the celebration cf the twenty-fifth anniversary of the foundation of the South Canterbury Association.

The meeting was attended by the president (Mr S. G. McClelland), and Messrs W. J. Foote, W. B. Richards, R. Wilson, G. J. Walker, A. R. Graham, H. W. Lomas and N. P. Nelson.
