Excellent Entries The Olympia Hall was a blaze of colour yesterday on the occasion of the annual spring flower show of the St. Paul’s Methodist Church. The function attracted excellent entries and although the weather has not been very favourable, the exhibits were well up to standard and elicited high praise from the judge, Mr A. Gibson, of Marton. Tire handwork displays of the children from the Primary School and High School were of a high standard and occasioned much comment. Features of the show were the displays, for exhibition only, staged by Mr A. Gibson and by the Borough gardener, Mr N. M. Morrison. The show was officially opened by the Rev. H. L. Richards. Prospects are bright for the opening of the fishing season in the Waimate district to-day. The Waihao River is rather low but is in capital order, and fish are reported to be plentiful. The season on the Waitaki opens on October 15. LOCAL GROWER’S SUCCESS A well-known Waimate horticulturist, Mr F. W. Jones, was very successful in the narcissi classes at the North Otago Horticultural Society's Show. He gained the award for champion bloom in the show (Bersheba), the champion trumpet (Bersheba), and carried off seven firsts and two seconds in the section. PERSONAL Mr David Tooley, formerly of the staff of the Waimate Post Office, has taken up his duties at the Martinborough Post Office. Mr E. Cholerton, optical specialist, proprietor of Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Waimate from 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, to 2.30 p.m., Thursday, October 13, when he may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel.
