FOUR POWERS IN CONFERENCE

MOVE TO PRESERVE PEACE

MR. CHAMBERLAIN’S LAST MINUTE APPEAL LEADERS CONFER AT MUNICH United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph—Copyright (Received September 29, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 29 The Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) took off from Heston at 8.35 a.m. Before departure Mr Chamberlain said: “When I was a little boy I used to repeat ‘if at first you don’t succeed try, try, try again.’ That is what I am doing. When I get back I hope to be able to say like Hotspur in ‘Henry IV’: ‘Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety.’ ” The French Prime Minister (M. Daladier) left Le Bourget at 8.45 a.m. A Berlin message states that to the accompaniment of shouts of “Victory,” and “Heil,” Herr Hitler left for Munich in a special train. The conference will be held at the Fuehrerhaus, a new Nazi building which is richly decorated in the Nazi style of architecture and which was ceremoniously inaugurated by Signor Mussolini during his previous visit. As the result of a final appeal sent by Mr Neville Chamberlain to Herr Hitler, the German Chancellor has agreed to a Four Power Conference between Mr Chamberlain, Signor Mussolini, the Prime Minister of France (M. Daladier) and the Fuhrer, which will begin at Munich at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Count Osaky, representing Hungary, is journeying to Munich by air. With Signor Mussolini and Herr Hitler already on the way, and M. Daladier flying from Paris and Mr Chamberlain from Heston, Munich, the birthplace of Nazism, becomes the latest of Europe’s quick changing scenes in quest for peace. Three of the four negotiators having served in the ranks during the Great War, and the fourth having most eloquently demonstrated his desire to prevent war, it is felt that peace should be the outcome. While the relief of France and Italy is not disguised, German official circles, though expressing hope that the conference will be successful, maintain reserve as shown in to-night’s “Diplomitische Korrespondez” which reiterates the demand for a speedy decision. Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says that he has authoritatively learned that Czechoslovakia suggested, in a Note to Mr Chamberlain, that she should be represented by a spokesman at the Munich conference. While Mr Chamberlain and M. Daladier are in the air a Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving will be sung in Westminster Cathedral in the presence of Cardinal Hinsley.

Later messages report that Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini arrived at 10.50, M. Daladier at 11.15, and Mr Chamberlain at 11.51 a.m.
