THE ELECTION CONTEST
To the Editor ot “ The Timaru Herald " Sir,—l listened to the speech of Mr Hamilton, the first po’itical speech I have heard for a long time. I have no time for party politics and not much time for the promises of politicians. Mr Hamilton may be an honest man, but as a politician I could not take his word when he says “He will not reduce wages or lengthen hours.” This is the same Mr Hamilton who voted for the wage cuts, reductions in old age pensions, allowed men, women and children to starve, and sent unemployed
men and youths to camps where they worked under bad conditions (for a few shillings a week). Mr Hamilton says "He will reduce costs and bring down the cost of living.” The only way he knows of reducing costs is to cut wages, etc. Mr Hamilton would like the people to believe that he is leading a new party, and that he is not a member of the “old gang.” The same old gang are behind his Party. Mr Forbes and Mr Coates are still with him, so are the wealthy men. Even if we have to pay extra taxation for “social security, etc.”, there are more smiling faces in New Zealand to-day, and men, women and children are lot starved.—l am, etc., E. J. C.
