CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
To the Editor ot " The Timaru Herald *’ Sir, —With all due respect to our inspectors and other authorities It amazes me the amount of cruelty to animals that goes on day by day. Last Monday afternoon I noticed a truck and trailer along Stafford Street with bobby calves in each vehicle. When the driver stopped to allow a passenger to alight, I stepped off the footpatl. to look at these poor beasts. Imagine my horror when I came close alongside to find half the animals down and being trampled and crushed under the hooves cf the others. Some were twisted and doubled up in what must have been agonising positions and the feet of those standing were not particular where they went. One poor beast had its eyes nearly gouged out by the hoofs of one which was actually standing on its head. I have been told on good authority that these trucks are supposed to be partitioned off. but the sight that met my eyes is also an everyday picture at the freezing works. Perhaps in future this may bring relief to some of these poor beasts if the authorities compel the drivers to use partitions.—l am, etc., KINDNESS TO ANIMALS.
