NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
TIMARU BRANCH The monthly meeting of the National Council of Women was held in the Foresters Hall, Mrs Kemshed presiding over a good attendance of representatives. A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss Fyfe in the death of her sister. Invitations were received from the Teachers’ Association to the welcome to Miss Elsie Andrews and to an address to be given by Professor Strong and Miss Gregory. The annual effort was discussed and It was decided not to hold a function this year. Mr J. Simes addressed the meeting on women’s status in legal and civic rights, particularly in the matter of contract, protection and matrimonial laws. He pointed out that women in democratic countries had progressed very considerably and were accorded every opportunity to express their ideals and aspirations. In comparison with the totalitarian countries they had much to be thankful for. They had equality of property with men, every protection by law in the provision for the ordlnn’-y purpose of living—while the matrimonial laws were ahead of the English ones. The vote should be women’s cherished possession, but was often a neglected privilege. Women she rid take an intelligent interest In the political Issues.
