WAIMATE POWER CHARGE

SOUTH CANTERBURY DISTRICT STATEMENT BY MR DASH “With the sixpenny unit as a maximum consumers of electricity in South Canterbury are in an enviable position in comparison with many other districts,” said the chairman of the South Canterbury Power Board (Mr G. Dash) yesterday, when he made a comparison with the recently announced reduced charges in Invercargill.

The Invercargill City authorities recently announced greatly reduced charges for electric light, heat and power, said Mr Dash. Their basis of charge is not on the South Canterbury room basis, but is a charge per 100 feet of floor space, and that is payable each month, in addition to the unit charges. A comparison made of the two accounts worked out that the occupier of the four-roomed house pays now in Invercargill 8/31 where the South Canterbury householder similarly situated paid 7 -. The occupier, of an eight-roomed house in Invercargill paid 13/01 as compared with the South Canterbury charge of 12 6. Cooking may be paid for in Invercargill on a separate meter at Id a unit. Mr Dash continued, but in South Canterbury this is obtainable as a part of the ordinary metering at Id. Water heating for 2 k.w. is £2 a year cheaper in Invercargill, but to secure this rate the consumer had to do without water heating from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day, whereas the South Canterbury hours totalled 20 to 22 daily. Full time power charges came to their lowest in Invercargill at lid and in South Canterbury to Id. Night rates for both were at id. These were the main charges, but there were many variations hi hours and rates. South Canterbury could

congratulate itself on being charged no more than was charged in at least one New Zealand city, Mr Dash concluded.

HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE MEETING Arrangements for the Waimate District Hunt Club’s steeplechase meeting were made at a meeting of the committee of the club on Tuesday evening. There were present—Capt. N. A. Rattray (chairman), Messrs M. J. Cooney, A. R. Medlicott, L. M. d’Auvergne, F. Cooney, D. Macdonald, E. B. Fraser, J. Sutherland. The secretary (Mr A. J. Hoskins) reported that Mr J. J. McGahey, of Christchurch, had been appointed totalisator inspector for the meeting. The tender of Mr G. Wardell (Timaru) for the licensed booth was accepted.

The chairman reported on the club’s Point-to-Point meeting which was held on the Waimate racecourse this year. Altogether it had been- a most successful day, he said. The club had not undertaken the running of the meet-

ing on the racecourse as a permanent event. The meeting had seemed a little short, and he thought the club should try to get a hack event included on the programme. The club was greatly indebted to the Racing Club for the use of its course on the day.

The balance-sheet for the Point-to-Point meeting showed a debit of £6,11/9 and that, Mr Hoskins said, was because this year the trophies had not been given and the club had had to buy them.

COMMUNITY SING

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION In spite of very bad weather, the Waimate Basketball Sub-Association's community sing was well patronised on Tuesday evening, and those who braved the cold and rain thoroughly enjoyed a good entertainment. The DeputyMayor (Mr W. G. Paul) opened the proceedings. Mr J. C. Buckler, of Christchurch, lived up to his reputation as a song leader, and with Mr F. L. Squire at the piano kept the audience amused and kept the singing going in good style. Mr Buckler, as auctioneer, put up a wide variety of goods for sale, but several non-perishable goods will be sold later at a stall in town. Opportunity was taken to present Mr Buckler with a vegetable bouquet and a small present for himself and for Mr Squire. Mrs Buckler, who delighted the audience with her songs, was presented with a box of chocolates from the Association and a bunch of carrots from her husband. The local Highland Pipe Band in full force gave a stirring item and helped the sing in many ways. Other items given through the evening were a Highland sword dance by Miss Margaret Moir, violin solos by Mr Mack, and vocal solos by Mr J. Smith. Before leaving again for Christchurch, Mr Buckler and party were entertained to supper.
