GERALDINE HIGHER COSTS AND LEVIES

INCREASE IN RATES BOROUGH ESTIMATES ADOPTED Owing to higher costs and increases in the South Canterbury Hospital Board and the Timaru Harbour Board levies, the Geraldine Borough Council has been obliged to increase the rates from 1/0! in the £ to 1/7 in the £. Notice of motion to this effect was given by Cr. H. Russell, chairman of the Finance Committee, at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council last

night. The new' rates will be as follow: General rate lOd, lighting rate lid, Town Hall and Library Loan 2d, Acetylene Gas and Masonic Hall Loan Sd, Hospital Board levy rate 13d, water rate 3d; a total of 1/7 In the £. FOOTBALL CLUB DANCE

PROCEEDS FOR INJURED PLAYER Under the auspices of the Geraldine Football Club Ladies' Committee a very successful benefit dance was held in the Geraldine Town Hall on Tuesday evening tor Mr Wallace McCullough, of the Geraldine team, who had the misfortune to break a leg in tlie Collogan Cup match against Temuka. During the supper interval, Mrs W. H. Morris, president of the Ladies’ Committee, thanked those present for their support, and made special reference to the generosity of Messrs C.-J. Kelland and J. P. Cliff, in providing the music gratuitously. She hoped that Mr McCullough would make a speedy recovery. Messrs P. Hendry and W. E. Foster acted as masters of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mr W. T. Mayne and Mr A. Thomas.

Novelty dances were won as follow: "Traffic Cop” waltz, Mrs H. Wilson and Mr P. Hendry; lucky spot one-step, Miss M. Weaver and Mr A. Cross. Those present included: Mr and Mrs F. C.
