CONTRACT TRIPS
OPPOSITION OF TAXI HRMS By Telegraph—!■ iess Association AUCKLAND, July 13. “I will certainly object to any of these contract trips arranged by the Railway Department competing unfairly with taxis,” said Mr J. E. Phelan, No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, at Auckland, when the Minister of Railways applied for a continuous passenger service license from any point within No. 1 district to any point in New Zealand. The application stated that any licensed vehicle in the Railways Road Service would be used, subject to the road classification. Four counsel were present watching the interests of taxi firms opposing the application. One counsel said the taxi firms could not run at the rates suggested by the Railways. “I am amazed and delighted to hear that," said Mr Phelan. “It is the first time to my knowledge that anyone has said that about the Railways, and it is very refreshing.” He added that he would make fares that were suitable and fair. Whatever fares were decided upon they would be universal. He reserved his decision.
